Chemistry at Berkeley
Chemistry at BerkeleyOne of the best schools in the country that has a chemistry department is the College of Chemistry, UC Berkeley. Although they have an engineering department and a biology department, they focus on chemistry. The course work is extensive and involved, but not overwhelming. All of the courses are taught in a small class size and there is some homework. They use research papers for some of the math and science courses. There are four classrooms in the Chemistry Department at Berkeley. They use two laboratories each with a computer lab, which can connect to a network. Some of the laboratory equipment includes a handheld multi-touch system. Caltech uses a similar lab equipment that has been used in the past at MIT.Some of the equipment includes a mechanical mixing machine, multimeters and temperature sensors, scanners, spectrometers, and glassware. These pieces of equipment can be connected to a network, which will allow students to take a course online or on campus an d then transfer their data to the other lab.The labs are good because they give students the chance to do a wide variety of experiments in a small space and they can control the environment through lighting, temperature, and humidity. They also use different types of filters to do experiments. All of the equipment is environmentally controlled and only uses water, which makes the equipment more safe than other lab equipment. The labs are also good because it gives online students and those on campus a chance to interact. They can share data through email or with hardware devices. The labs give students a chance to design capabilities in their lab space, which will help them to design things that will make their experiments better. The size of the laboratory allows students to study how science goes through changes from generation to generation. The labs will help students understand the concepts and tools needed for online chemistry courses and can even help them practice how to read a nd interpret lab reports. Students can access information in the lab through a desktop unit or a laptop, which will allow them to be able to do independent research.

How to Burn Calories without Even Trying
How to Burn Calories without Even Trying Via Flickr.com; uploaded by normanack During the week, it may seem like all you have time for is studying and sleeping, if youâre lucky. The hours and days just seem to fly by as you sit in front of your computer commenting on facebook about the ten page paper due tomorrow that you havenât started or mindlessly doodling in the margins of your psychology reading. It makes it very difficult to find time to go to the gym and get in a solid work-out without stressing about the textbooks left unattended in your room. But, did you know that studying can actually burn calories? An average female will burn 670 calories after studying for six hours, while an average male will burn 806 calories! If you are just relaxing and daydreaming at your desk either in class or in your room for six hours, a female can burn up to 383 calories while a male can burn 460 calories. Even showering, brushing your teeth, and styling your hair can burn caloriesâ"so keep up with your hygiene! Every little activity you do has the poten tial to burn calories, and in turn, shed pounds. To maximize your ability to burn calories without even stepping foot in the gym, keep up with your simple routine, but just add a little extra passion to it! 1) Brush your teeth the recommended 3 minutes. Brushing your teeth for six minutes a day can burn 15 calories for an average female and 18 for a male. In just one month of brushing, you have burned about two slices of Boston crème pie! If you want an extra big slice, invest in a tooth tunes toothbrush and dance along to songs like Black Eyed Peasâ âI Gotta Feelingâ like no one is watching, although I gotta feeling that your entire dorm will be. 2) Take the Stairs. I know they can seem awfully steep and intimidating after a long day of class, but 30 minutes of stair climbing is equivalent to 243 and 293 burnt calories for an average female and male, respectively. Getting to the top will never feel more rewarding! 3) Speed Walk to Class. After finally finishing your paper, you might be running a bit late anyway, so use your irresponsibility to your advantage to entice you to speed walk or even run to class. An hour of speed walking is equivalent to the loss of 311 or 374 calories for average women or men. 4) Shower. Please do this whether you are interested in burning calories or notâ¦but one positive outcome of doing this (besides not repelling your classmates) is an average female can burn 85 calories while an average male can burn 102. To burn a few more: scrub your hair with some extra vigor, shake out the last drop of shampoo (the movement and distribution of shampoo in the bottle while you shake it works and tones your arms almost like the shake weight, almostâ¦maybe), and of course dancing is always an optionâ"just watch your elbows inside the 22 cube! 5) Clean your Room. Not only will your parents be impressed when they come to visit, but you can burn some major calories. Mopping for an hour can burn 271 calories for an average female and 326 for an average male; rearranging furniture for thirty minutes can burn 200 or 240 calories; and standing and admiring your work for twenty minutes can burn 24 or 29! Need more to clean? Ask your friends if they want to pay you to clean and feng shui their rooms. To calculate how many calories you burn every day, whether you are just doing your day to day activities or training for marathons, check out this Calorie Burn Calculator from Health Status. I used this tool to estimate the calories burned for each activity based on the average weights and heights of the average male and female. Find out how many more calories you can burn just by doing more of what you already do!

Basic accounting Tutor can help students to learn accountancy easily
Basic accounting Tutor can help students to learn accountancy easily Commerce is a huge subject and the subject enrolls in it business mathematics, accountancy, commercial studies and so on. Every part of the stream is important for the student who has chosen commerce as the subject. Commerce is a subject that deals entirely with business and business minded people take up the subject. As I have been a student of commerce for few years, I know a bit about it. Commerce is an interesting subject and the subject gains more recognition among the ones who have a good business approach or loves to deal with banks, stock market, monetary gains and losses. Commerce has a subject as accountancy which is a very important subject and the ones who studies commerce has to go through this subject as well. Accountancy deals with assets, liabilities, income, expenses and equity. Accountancy is a record through which a company can maintain its profit and loss, debit and credit and so on. It is categorized into three further subjects and those are financial accounting, management accounting and tax accounting. Every basic accounting student need to know the subject from its base. When you will start off with the subject from very initial time and in a firm manner, things can turn out to be easier related with the subject. But for getting a good base, you need the help of a good teacher who can help you with all the adversities of the subject. This is the time when you think about hiring or getting in touch with such a teacher who is qualified enough to know the subject from its roots so that they can deliver their best to the students. Students or their parents can go for private tutoring facility as well where they will come across some good, efficient teachers and some very average and not so good teachers. But candidates are not able to choose which one to go for. This is one of the biggest flaws that private tutoring has with it. No one knows what is the qualification of the teacher and how much capability does he have with the subject. This is a big thing to worry as people who are into such business of delivering the knowledge may not turn out to be expert enough. Thus you need help at that time. Online tutoring institutes can help you with the best availability of teachers and the teachers are very much efficient with their subject. This is helpful for any student who has been into the learning process. The online tutoring services have lots of such institutes that can help a student to get help. The online tutoring institutes have some of the best teachers who are not available through any other means. This is because of the fact that the teachers who are appointed have to go through a very tough interview process that will help the student to learn more in a better and easier format. They are the powerhouse of knowledge regarding the subject and thus they can deliver same to the student with better perfection. As good and efficient teachers are appointed, so the students will not have to think more about how to make the entire process come across. The teacher first plans the process and also gets a grip over how the student exactly is. After a detailed knowledge about the student, the teacher moves ahead of making the classes to come alive. This is very good and helpful for the teacher as well as for the student as learning the subject becomes easier. Te online tutoring institute does not have any kind of time imitation inscribed in it. it totally depends on the teacher and the student as to how long they want to continue. The student can get enough time or the time that they want for any lesson. They can continue with the classes whenever possible. The teachers are available all round the clock and this helps in making the work to be easy as well as assessable. Whenever there is a doubt, the teacher is there to help you out. A 10 Step Guide to the High School Juniors Spring
A 10 Step Guide to the High School Junior's Spring Junior year is a crucial period in your high school career. Many students name it as the hardest stretch of months to weather, but with appropriate preparation and a sense of the path ahead, it likewise rewards those students who truly apply themselves. Here are 10 things you must do this spring to ensure your success: 1. Commit to your schoolwork Your junior-year grades hold great importance in the college application process. Aim to excel, as they are the most recent complete record of your success in academia (as opposed to partial senior-year reports). They may affect your chances of admission and your likelihood of receiving financial aid. 2. Organize your materials AP exams, applications, coursework, and standardized tests all involve excess amounts of paperwork. As the demands on your time grow, preserve your peace of mind by identifying and employing an organizational system that you understand. Do not conclude your junior year by misplacing an important document. Here are 6habits to help you become a more organized student. 3. Sit for the ACT/SAT The spring is an ideal time to complete the ACT or SAT. By this point in the school year, you should possess the necessary knowledge to address each exams content. Review for the test, then select from April or June dates for the ACT and May or June dates for the SAT. These are some great ACT practice testsand SAT practice testsyou can use to help you study. 4. Evaluate your ACT/SAT performance When you receive your ACT or SAT results, decide whether they meet your expectations. If you did not reach your target score, determine whether or not that mark is still feasible in order to reach your college admission goals. If it is, schedule a second test date as early as possible for your senior year. This is some great information on how to analyze practice test results. 5. Conduct college research The latter half of your junior year is the stage at which you should deepen your college search. Examine the specific qualities of each school including academics, financial aid, housing, and social aspects. You can then start to whittle your list to programs that truly interest you. 6. Review extracurricular/volunteer experience Your extracurricular activities and volunteer history are highly important components of your admissions package. Compile a list of your involvement thus far and decide whether you would like to augment it with additional opportunities. If so, seek those chances nownot solely in your senior year. 7. Determine your recommenders Countless students in your graduating class will eventually require recommendation letters. Identify the individuals who are best equipped to discuss your application and approach them as soon as possible. A request with ample time to complete it will be better received than a last-minute plea. 8. Start your application essay Once you begin to narrow your list of prospective colleges, consider drafting your personal statement for the schools that interest you most. Often, elite colleges utilize unique prompts and specific guidelines, and it is wise to budget several months to allow multiple revisions for each. These are 6 application essay mistakesyou will want to make sure you avoid. 9. Choose your senior classes As you develop your academic schedule for senior year, do so with an eye toward balance. Like juniors, seniors have a number of responsibilities to attend to. Opt for AP and dual-enrollment courses, but do not overburden yourself in your final year of high school either. 10. Ace AP exams AP tests take place over two weeks in May. Scores of 4 and 5and occasionally 3are very likely to result in college credit or waived curriculum requirements. Succeeding on those exams is in your best interest (and your parents wallets!). Just as you do with the ACT or SAT, prepare accordingly.
Shooting in the Workplace - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Shooting in the Workplace - Introvert Whisperer Shooting in the Workplace This article was originally published on Hoganinjury.com You are entitled to expect security and safety whenever youâre inside the workplace. Because you spend a lot of your time in the office, sometimes more than you do at home, your employer has the responsibility to make sure that each of their employees is safe within the confines of their establishment. Security and safety donât refer to just your protection from accidents but also your security whenever an untoward event perpetrated by unscrupulous people occur like gun shooting or robbery. Last April 3 one of the biggest companies in the world had a shooting incident. The Youtube headquarters in San Bruno, California was attacked by a disgruntled user named Nasim Najafi Aghdam, a 38-year-old woman who used a semi-automatic pistol in the attack. There were four injuries from the incident, three of which were caused by the shooter and one injury was sustained by an employee while fleeing the building. This incident makes you wonder how the gunman was able to get past the security in one of the most successful companies in the world. Although Youtubeâs San Bruno headquarter employs security guards in the premises, they are typically stationed at desks inside the buildings. The reason behind this is because Youtube and other modern tech companies like to maintain a casual and relaxed atmosphere for their employees. Although this may facilitate creativity and cooperation among employees and even company leaders, it opens the workplace to incidents like the one that happened to Youtube. When you suffer from injuries in a workplace shooting incident, you are entitled to damages from your workersâ compensation insurance. In California, even if youâre the sole employee of a business, you are still entitled to workersâ compensation. While it is essential to have security measures in place for offices, there will be times when an untoward incident may still occur, and a shooter can get past these security measures. Here are some tips for employees when a shooting happens in the workplace: 1. Run. Make sure that you know all the exit routes beforehand; this applies to your workplace and whenever you go someplace new. Knowing emergency exit location is not just beneficial in shooting incidents, it could be useful for other situations like a fire or an earthquake. Remember that your life is the most important things in these types of situations, leave your belongings if you must, if you could convince your co-workers to run with you, do so, however, do not let them slow you down. Your chance of survival increases the faster you can get out of the shooting range. 2. Hide. If you canât run from the shooter or the exit route puts you in their sight, itâs best to hide and barricade yourself. Look for a place that is outside of the shooterâs view and can protect you in case of shots being fired. Lock the doors and create a barricade using whatever resources are available; use tables, chairs, filing cabinets, or other items that can prevent the shooter from entering your hiding place. Turn the lights off and keep quiet. If you cannot find a safe room, the next best thing is to look for an object big enough to cover you like a wide concrete pillar. Try your best to remain calm and donât draw attention to yourself. 3. Fight. Only do this in dire situations where you canât run or hide. Commit to hurting your shooter, do not hesitate to go for the most vulnerable body parts like the eyes, throat, and groin; if you can find a weapon use it. Your goal is to disable the shooter to give you enough time to run or hide. In any situation, you should always think of your safety first. Keep a level of calm and call 911 as soon as safely possible. Did you sustain an injury in the workplace? Contact us at Hogan Injury for expert legal advice. Should I Go To Columbia University
Should I Go To Columbia University The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Jordy is a New York City tutor specializing in many subjects such as AP English tutoring, SAT prep tutoring, ISEE prep tutoring,SSAT prep tutoringand more. She holds a Bachelors degree in English Literature and Art History from Columbia University from which she graduated in 2007. See what she had to say about her alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Jordy:Columbia is an absolutely beautiful campus. In fact, the campus itself is one of the main things that initially attracted me to the school. Despite being in the middle of Manhattan, you walk through those gates and you are in a world unto itself, each building grand and gorgeous. The library faade is literally inscribed with the names of philosophical and literary heavyweights, so the buildings themselves actually inspire one to think and work harder. As far as transportation options go, I found it to be a plus to not have a car at college. New Yorks public transport system is so comprehensive, and there is a subway stop right outside the College Walk gates that is actually called 116th Street Columbia University and tiled in Columbia blue. I have never felt unsafe on the subway, and of course if youre in a hurry or its super late at night, theres always a yellow cab within an arms reach. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Jordy:I always found that if I wanted to speak to someone, they were available. Its one of the benefits of a small campus and undergraduate community that you never have to walk more than a couple of blocks to chat with someone. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Jordy:The housing at Columbia is great. In fact, over 90% of undergrads live on campus all four years, and theres a huge range of types of housing, from standard hallway dorms on the quad to pre-war apartments owned by the university several blocks from the main campus. Even freshman year, there are several optionsa social dorm of double rooms organized in suites, a more private dorm of small single rooms, and even some suite-style housing that includes students from across all four years. Every freshman lives right on the main quad, no more than a three minute walk to the library and main dining hall. I met some of my life-long best friends in my freshman dormwe all happened to be stacked on top of each other in three consecutive floors. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Jordy:I always knew I wanted to major in English in college, and I came to Columbia for their renowned Core Curriculum (summer before freshman year, everyones required to read The Iliad), but through luck and an open elective spot my sophomore fall, I happened to also take an art history class that totally changed my life. Theres nothing like being able to study art history in New York City, where you can go see so many of the works in person, and the following spring, I ended up declaring a double major, and was even able to study abroad in Paris and see many more works with my own eyes. The most popular majors on campus seem to be Economics and Political Science, but because of the Core Curriculum I mentioned, everyone takes classes together and has a strong shared experience. Its wonderful to know that if I happen to meet an alum from the class of 1950 or 2050, we will be able to discuss the same great texts. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Jordy:As I mentioned, because the whole freshman class is concentrated into a few dorms, one dining hall, and takes Core classes together, its really easy to meet people and get to know them. And since NYC is just outside the gates, there is always something to check out with your new friends. Greek life is a small presence on campusthough I do love to point out that our sororities and fraternities are housed in gorgeous old Upper West Side brownstones. Its more common for guys to participate in Greek life, as most of the fraternities are organized around sports teams. But the option is definitely there if youre interested. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Jordy:Because of Columbias central location and stellar reputation, everyone recruits on campus. There are career fairs, internship opportunities, field-based recruitingyou name it, you can find it. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Jordy:The libraries at Columbia are gorgeous, and the system is one of the largest in the nation, and if CU doesnt have a book, theyll bring it in overnight from a nearby Ivy like Yale or Brown. Actually, because everyones working so hard all the time, the library becomes a social hub of its own, and you figure out the rooms to go to if you need to buckle down versus those you head toward if you have time to chat with friends and eat some snacks. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Jordy:Obviously, Columbia is smack in the middle of New York City, but it is distinctly different from other city schools in that it has a gorgeous campus that is set apart from the hustle and bustle, as opposed to hidden among non-campus city buildings. There are tons of cute, student-focused restaurants, bars, and coffee shops right around the perimeter of campus that give the area of Morningside Heights a very neighborhood-y feel. And the rest of New York is just a subway ride away! VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Jordy:There are a lot of students on the Columbia campus at any given time, but the undergraduate community is actually one of the smallest in the Ivy League, at around 5,000 students. In my four years, I had only four large lectures, and none were within my majors. The rest of my classes fell into one of two groups: lectures with around 40 students that required a small discussion section, and classes of 20 or fewer. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Jordy: I felt most lucky to be beginning my Art History major the year that the Museum of Modern Art reopened following an extensive renovation. As we learned about the landmarks of Western Art, we were able to visit the MoMA and see the Pollacks, Lichtensteins, and Warhols in person. This class and the opportunities afforded to us by being in the city changed the course of my academic trajectory and even led me to study abroad in Paris, which was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Singers How to Warm Up Your Vocal Cords
Singers How to Warm Up Your Vocal Cords Suzy S. Image via Wikipedia Ancient civilizations discovered powerful truths about vocalizing and singing that are relevant to modern students of voice and song. We all go through our daily lives speaking, humming, and singing some of the time without realizing the effects of things we do half-consciously. Or maybe we just suspect it! Well here are some facts!! By focusing on singing, speaking, or chanting the vowels (A,E,I,O,U) we release a myriad of emotions in an uplifting and healing manner. Chanting or singing mantras are based on vowel-combinations that when chanted in a particular way produce a vibrating effect on our entire system, our nerves, glands, and the brain. Here are some vowel sounds to use for warmup drills. Singers, performers of all kinds, and instrumentalists may benefit from using these simple exercises. A (pronounced âAhâ) Induces a state of calm, peace, serenity. Resonates at the toop of the thorax and esophagus (upper chest). The vibrations have a healing effect on the heart. A(pronounced as in âglassâ) resonates in the upper part of the lungs.E(pronounced âehâ) Develops self-confidence. It resonates in the neck, throat, vocal chords, teeth, and thyroid glands. I (pronounced âeeâ) is the vowel of laughter. It resonates in the bridge of the nose and crown of the head, affecting the brain and organs of the skull. O (pronounced as in âhomeâ) Turns inward and gives the sensation of seriousness, completion, and perfection. It vibrates in the lower part of the lung, heart, and stomach. OU (pronounced âooâ) has a similar sensation to O, but sweeter. It vibrates in the lower abdomen, affecting the kidneys and stomach. Simple warmup exercises that help you get emotionally clear and refreshed: Balancing the Whole Body: A E I (pronounced ahh-ee) O OU For the ears: ENN For the nose and sinuses: MA For the head and jaw: YA YOU YAI For the stomach: HUH HUH HUH Vowels are to be sounded with the full energy of a deep breath. For example, when using I (pronounced ah-eee), inhale first, and then without exhaling, sound a strong and piercing EEEEE, parting your mouth as in a smile. Keep at the same pitch. Keep sounding as you exhale but do not use up all your air. Rest and repeat the exercise 3 to 4 times. Soon you will notice a definite vibrating effect in your head which is pleasant. This activity helps to clear the brain, eyes, nose, and ears. This is a good morning exercise!! Richard is a voice, guitar and piano instructor in Berkeley, CA.
